What is Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP)?
As a public entity, the Municipality of Argyle adheres to Nova Scotia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The Municipal Government Act grants authority for most municipal operations in Nova Scotia and includes FOIPOP provisions in Part XX.
These laws uphold transparency and accountability while safeguarding personal privacy and information.
What Information Can Be Accessed?
The public has the right to access most recorded information held by the Municipality, though certain exemptions apply.
At the same time, individuals have the right to privacy regarding their personal information under the Municipality’s control, including details such as name, address, and phone number.
By law, the FOIPOP Administrator cannot disclose:
- Information that may harm inter-municipal or intergovernmental relations or breach confidentiality agreements with other governments unless consent is given.
- Information that could negatively impact the financial or economic interests of the Municipality, another municipality, or the Province.
- Records related to specific labour relations, mediation, or conciliation proceedings.
- Information protected by solicitor-client privilege.
- Personal information belonging to others.
- Details that could significantly affect a third party’s business interests.
- Information that may compromise law enforcement activities.
- Data that could harm the economic or financial interests of a public body, individuals, or the public.
Additionally, individuals have the right to access their own personal records held by the Municipality and request updates or corrections to their personal information.
